Wine 2.18 Released with Radial gradients in Direct2D

The Wine development 2.18 was released a day ago. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu via its official repository.

Wine 2.18 features radial gradients in Direct2D, asynchronous message support in WebServices, virtual memory write watches improvements, freeType 2.8.1 compatibility fixes, as well as a total of 22 bug-fixes.

How to Install Wine 2.18 in Ubuntu:

The official Wine repository offers the latest packages for Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 17.04, and their derivatives.

1. Open terminal via Ctrl+Alt+T or by searching for it from app launcher, when it opens, run command:

sudo apt-add-repository

Input your password (no visual feedback while typing) when it prompts and hit Enter.


For Linux Mint 18.x, use following command instead to add the wine repository:

sudo apt-add-repository 'deb xenial main'

2. Download and install the repository key via command:

wget -nc; sudo apt-key add Release.key


3. Finally install Wine development release via command:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install --install-recommends winehq-devel

To remove the latest Wine development 2.x, open terminal and run command:

sudo apt-get remove --autoremove winehq-devel
