Enable ‘New Document’ Menu Option in Ubuntu 20.04 File Browser

This quick tutorial shows how to add the ‘New Document’ option in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS default Gnome desktop.

It has been a long time that Ubuntu desktop missing the ‘New Document’ menu option. I don’t know why, but it’s easy to add the feature back.

1. Open terminal either by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard or by searching for ‘terminal’ from application menu.

2. When terminal opens, run command:

touch ~/Templates/Untitled\ Document

The command will create a new file Untitled Document in user’s Templates folder.

You can change Untitled\ Document in the command, which will display as the submenu of ‘New Document’. And note that “\” is required if there’s a blank space in it.

That’s it. Enjoy!

  2. Thank You!

  3. This does not work on Desktop. Anyone knows how to enable it there?

  4. This works only when you want to create a New Document” in a folder.
It does not let you create a New Doument” directly on the desktop (unless you open the desktop folder).
This is the case since Ubuntu 19.10 and 20.04 of course
