Wine 1.8.5 Stable Released with Plenty of Bug Fixes

For those who are sticking to Wine 1.8 stable series, Wine 1.8.5 has been released a few hours ago as the latest.

According to the official announcement, Wine 1.8.5 does not bring any new feature. However, there are a total of 85 bug-fixes affect Windows Movie Maker 2.x, Microsoft Publisher 2007/2010, CAPCOM games, 3DMark03, Unreal Tournament 3, GOG Galaxy, and other software.

How to install Wine 1.8.5 in Ubuntu:

While winehq offers only the latest development Ubuntu binaries, for those who want to install Wine 1.8 stable, there’s an unofficial PPA for Ubuntu 16.10, Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 14.04, and Ubuntu 12.04.

Check the ppa link above before starting, there may be a small time delay for the maintainer to upload the latest packages.

1. Open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz/unstable

Type in your password when prompts and hit Enter

2. Then upgrade from a previous Wine 1.8 series using Software Updater.

Or just run the commands below one by one in terminal:

sudo apt update

sudo apt install wine1.8

Uninstall Wine 1.8:

To uninstall this software, open terminal and run command:

sudo apt remove wine && sudo apt autoremove

And the PPA repository can be removed via System Settings -> Software & Updates -> Other Software tab.
